Seeing The World Better in a New ‘Light’

Have you always dreamt of waking up and being able to see clearly, without having to grab for your glasses? Well, the good news is that there is a solution and it could change your life dramatically!

Yes, we are talking about LASIK surgery. So what’s this miracle surgery all about? Read on to learn more.

What is LASIK?

Customized LASIK procedure

This is a procedure which measures and corrects the irregularities in the optical system of the eye. Customized Lasik is an advanced and sophisticated LASIK procedure which is used worldwide to treat patients. In fact, when compared to the standard LASIK procedure, patients who opted for Customized had significantly better vision.

Intralase method

This is the ‘blade-free LASIK experience.’ In this method, a 100% blade free approach is adopted to create your corneal flap. Traditionally, doctors use an instrument called microkeratome, a hand-held blade which would move across the eye cutting the corneal flap.

However, in the latest intralase method, your doctor can create a corneal flap without the blade ever touching your eye and it takes only about 15 to 30 seconds. Once the LASIK is complete, the same method is used to ‘LOCK’ the flap back.

The intralase method also delivers excellent results and patients who have undergone this surgery report of better quality vision, especially their ability to see well in low light – like during dusk or at night.

Benefits of LASIK

LASIK surgery has several benefits

Firstly, if your doctor says it works, trust him, because LASIK actually works! More than 90 per cent of patients get back their desired vision following a LASIK surgery.

Following the benefits you may want to know if you are the right candidate for a LASIK surgery – If you are above 18 years of age and your eye glasses/lens power has been stable for 12 months, you are good to go.

Myths and Facts of LASIK

Myth : LASIK is still a new technology and does not yield long-term results

Fact : Research has shown that LASIK is an effective way to treat common refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, with over 20 years of proven results. During that time, over 35 million procedures have been performed worldwide.

Myth : Patients who have undergone LASIK still have trouble with their night vision

Fact : In the past, night time vision complaints (glare and halos) were a common side-effect following LASIK surgery. However, the latest advances in Custom Wave front technology have minimized the risks of developing these side-effects.

Myth : LASIK surgery is not suitable for people who’ve crossed forty years of age.

Fact : Over 99% of patients are between 18-50 years of age. .

Myth : LASIK is too expensive

fact : LASIK is an investment that can actually save you money. When you factor in what you are already spending on glasses, contacts and solution every year, LASIK is an affordable solution.

Myth : LASIK is too risky

fact : LASIK is widely regarded as one of the safest elective procedure in modern medicine. It also yields some of the highest levels of patient satisfaction of any procedure, according to results of a worldwide study printed in a 2009 issue of Ophthalmology.

Find the right surgeon

Make sure you do a bit of research about the surgeon and hospital before you opt for a LASIK surgery. The surgeon should be experienced with a good reputation and access to latest technology. Also, your surgeon needs to be available after surgery.

Glaucoma Eye Treatment

“A Disease that can rob you of your vision”

Glaucoma is an eye disease and a leading cause of blindness in India and the world over. Loss of vision from glaucoma is Preventable if treated in the early stages of the disease. It has been estimated that more than half of those affected do not know they have glaucoma as the symptoms like, pain, redness, reduced vision do not occur most often.

What is Glaucoma?

Normally, the eye produces a fluid called Aqueous Humor within it. This fluid is drained out or reabsorbed into the blood stream. Hence a balance is maintained between production and drainage of this fluid, so as to maintain the normal pressure within the eye. This pressure is known as Intra-Ocular pressure. An imbalance between production and drainage of this fluid causes a rise in intra-ocular pressure.

When the intra-ocular pressure increases, the optic nerve (which is responsible for carrying the visual messages to the brain from the eye) is damaged. Damage to the optic nerve results in loss of vision. This damage to the optic nerve takes place very slowly and most often the person is not at all aware of the visual loss. There are two common types of glaucoma.

Open Angle Glaucoma, where in the patient has no redness or pain. Often the person has absolutely no symptoms, which would warn them of an eye problem. This is the commonest type *Angle closure glaucoma, the patient can have occasional pain or discomfort, haloes around light, redness of the affected eye and headache. How is Glaucoma Diagnosed? Most often, glaucoma is detected during routine and regular eye checkups.

Regular eye checkups are necessary as one may develop glaucoma at anytime. The eye pressures are checked in both eyes. If there is any indication / suspicion of glaucoma further tests like Visual Field test (Auto-perimetry), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) etc are done. These tests can identify the presence of nerve damage.

Who are at risk?
How is glaucoma treated?

Glaucoma may be successfully treated by one or a combination of the following •

Eye Drops, Tablets, Laser, Surgery-may be required in a few Glaucoma Patients. Glaucoma treatment is a lifelong process and all patients should have a regular follow up once every 6 months-1year. Is Glaucoma preventable?-No, glaucoma cannot be prevented. But early detection and treatment can reduce the chances of damage to the eye. Without treatment people with glaucoma may seem as though they are looking through a tunnel. Over a period of time the remaining vision may decrease until there is no vision left.

HENCE the importance of EARLY DETECTION. People with family history of glaucoma or presence of other risk factors and people above 40yrs of age should get their eye checked up once every year.
